Fear Of Risk

The Fear That Binds

There is no doubt that fear of risk, if left to itself, will stop us in our tracks.

It will wall us in.

It will make us small.  It will constrain us.

It will crush our growth.  It will squash our spirit.  It will curb our enthusiasm and limit our ability to be all that we can be.

Yes, fear can be very powerful… if we give it power.

In coaching we help clients deal with fear every day.  No matter what the situation, at some time in a coaching relationship, fear will present itself as a barrier to making real progress towards a goal.

And when fear arrives we coaches help our clients see it, feel it, understand it, manage it and move through it.  It’s not always easy.  It can even be painful.  But it’s quite achievable.

Fear is a barrier to progress.

I don’t know anybody who isn’t afraid of something.  And that’s perfectly natural.  Let’s face it, it’s not a bad thing that fear prevents us from stepping out on the street into the path of moving cars, or stops us from leaping off tall buildings.

So fear has its purpose.  It serves to protect us.  But what happens when fear does more than protect us from danger?  What happens when it protects us from things that aren’t real?  What happens when it limits us?

Here’s something to think about.  Sometimes when fear limits us, we don’t even recognize it as fear.  Hard to believe isn’t it?  Yes… but it’s true.

Getting out of your comfort zone.

Imagine you want to do something that you have never done before.  By this I don’t mean something trivial like playing a new game or trying a new food.  I mean something big… something significant.  I mean something that really stretches you outside of where you normally go, what you normally do or how you normally behave… something out of your “comfort zone”.

You have thought about it.  You want it.  You have even made a few plans to move forward towards doing it.  You may have even dreamed about it.  But for some reason you never quite get started.  No matter what, it never seems to be the right time.  There never seems to be the right conditions.  There is always a reason to put it off.

Listen carefully to your inner dialogue.

So what’s stopping you?  Let’s listen in on what your inner voice is saying.  Oh, don’t deny it, you have an inner voice.  We all do.  And if you are like most of us, there are times when your inner voice can have an awful lot to say.  So what’s it saying?

Don’t be surprised or shocked if you hear something like these little dialogues running in your head.

I can’t…

I don’t know how…

I don’t understand…

I don’t have time…

I don’t have room…

I am not sure…

It won’t…

I will fail…

It’ll never work…

No one will want it…

No one will like it…

No one will see it…

People will think…

I’m not good enough…

I’m not smart enough…

I am not educated enough…

I’m not strong enough…

I’m not as good as…

I’m not as smart as…

I’m not as educated as…

I’m not connected to…

I’m too old…

I’m too young…

I’m too fat…

I’m too heavy…

I’m too thin…

I’m not attractive…

It’s too late…

It won’t work…

Did you recognize any “old friends” on the list?  What do you make of that?  And… what has any of that got to do with fear?

Well here’s the big secret.  That is how the fear of risk shows up in your life.  That’s how fear cleverly disguises itself and stops you in your tracks.  And it’s perfectly natural for it to show up that way.  It’s a part of your humanity.

So now what?  How do I live a full life in spite of my fear of risk?  Read on to learn how to overcome fear.
