Since the beginning of time, we humans have been focusing on how to overcome fear. When it comes to overcoming fear, you may be thinking, “Okay, so what do I do about fear? How do I overcome fear? How do I conquer it? How do I strip it of its power?”
Those are all great questions. And here are a few more to consider. “How do you make use of fear? How do you put it to useful purpose? How do you harness fear for good?”
So, let’s review what we know. We know that fear is a protection mechanism. It attempts to protect us from harm. It uses incredible physical and psychological power to prevent us from taking action. Have you ever heard the term “frozen in fear” or “paralysed by fear”? It’s real.
So then, what’s wrong with fear? Why not just let it do what it does? Isn’t that just being human?
Here’s the deal. Do you want to be your very best and live your life to its fullest potential? To do that, you have to grow and expand beyond your current capacity and capability. You have to stretch way past your comfort zone… way past the place where you feel safe.
The place where you feel safe… did you hear that? So what tries to keep you safe, no matter what the perceived threat is? FEAR! That’s its job… keeping you safe.
You know, I believe this picture is becoming clearer. Here you are expanding your wings in an attempt to stretch yourself by doing something extraordinary, something bold, and maybe even daring. You know it’s what you want and you are well intended.
But then Fear kicks in. Yes it’s your Human response. The next thing you hear is the little voice inside your head. It’s having a grand time telling you all of the reasons that what you are about to do is dangerous and should be avoided. Well it doesn’t always say that it’s dangerous. Sometimes it simply lies to convince you that you can’t or shouldn’t do something. It’s all perfectly natural.
Here’s the good news. You don’t have to conquer fear and destroy it. You don’t even have to lock it up or hold it at bay. You don’t have to learn to ignore it.
Okay then, to learn how to overcome fear, what do you do? Simply embrace it, listen to it, understand it, interpret it, challenge its validity and make choices on how you will respond and proceed.
The key words here are “make choices on how you will respond and proceed.” It’s all about choice. And it’s all about you keeping your power and using it as you desire for your purpose.
“Thank you Fear for the warning, but I have assessed the danger and I can manage it. Thanks for looking out for me, but I have this one covered. So now it’s time for you to step aside.”
And here is something I have noticed. As I move further outside of my comfort zone, fear becomes louder and more persistent. I have also noticed that the further I stretch and move outside my comfort zone the more I grow and develop.
What a wonderful monitor! When there is no real danger and my fear is at its greatest intensity, is exactly when I am experiencing amazing growth and expanding myself to new heights. How cool is that?
Here’s how to overcome fear. When Fear speaks up, be aware. It may be telling you the truth… yes fire is hot, or it may be sending a false alarm.
You have the power to challenge its validity and choose an appropriate response. It is your choice. You can choose to live fully and grow. You can choose to play small and be guided and limited by your fear. Use your power. Choose wisely.
